DEDICATION
BCMS: The Journey from
French Place to Loop 1604

The Bedell-Moore home – The original home of In April of 2003, Dr. Antonio Cavazos Jr., then president of the Bexar
BCMS at West French Place. County Medical Society decided, along with the Board of Directors, to hire
me to be the Executive Director. The society had recently undergone some
14 San Antonio Medicine • June 2016 financial challenges and the first order of business was to right the ship. Part
of that process involved examination of the space needs of the society relative
to the existing premises.
The BCMS building on West French Place had a rich history with the med-
ical society. The old Bedell-Moore home that originally existed on the property
when it was purchased in 1933 was eventually replaced by a more modern
structure in 1961, and then remodeled in 1997. The building had ample meet-
ing space, a large lobby, a grand staircase and lots of empty office space. It
turned out, however, that the building was much larger than what the society
needed for its own business.
The answer to the excess space seemed obvious at the time; put the extra
space up for lease. So we put a large sign on the property facing out towards
