BCMS
BCMS The Physician Health and Rehabilitation (PH&R) Committee’s goal is to encourage
PH&R and guide doctors with substance use disorders in order to facilitate the recovery of the
Committee impaired physician. PH&R is a confidential committee of physician colleagues that iden-
tify and facilitate recovery success for other physicians whose abilities are impaired by
alcohol or drugs, through support and monitoring, to help the impaired doctor to return
to practice and home life free of alcohol and drugs. We help these doctors learn how to
cope with the stresses of modern medical practice with a manner of living which is safe,
calm, and at peace without the need for their former coping mechanisms which led them
into an addictive lifestyle.
The BCMS PH&R Committee provides responsible, confidential advocacy to desig-
nated medical boards, hospital PH&R committees, credentialing authorities, and others
at the request of the participants who maintain compliance within our program. The
PH&R Committee monitors physicians to ensure they are safe to practice medicine.
The BCMS PH&R Committee has set the standards for other programs across the
state. In the 26 years of its existence the committee has helped hundreds of physicians
successfully recover while keeping patients safe. Those being helped are able to safely
practice medicine and return to their families and practices whole again and renewed.
More information is available at www.bcms.org/committees/phr.html, by calling 210-
301-4373 or emailing PH&R@bcms.org.
Dr. Oliver Johnson, the current chair of the PH&R Committee, is a Board Certified Anes-
thesiologist in private practice with Star Anesthesia for the past 26 years. He has been chair-
man of the BCMS PH&R Committee since 1999. He lives in San Antonio with his wife
and 6 children. He is a photographer having traveled to France, Italy, Sicily, and around the
US on photoshoots with other photographers. His work appeared in the San Antonio Med-
icine magazine in the February 2015 edition.
Recognition (Unsung Hero)
The members of the Bexar County Medical Society have often
expressed how invaluable their staff members are to their practice.
An office manager is the person that often supervises the office
staff, ensures superior customer service, and manages the medical
billing team. These unsung heroes are the right hand of the practic-
ing physician. They ensure that all functions of the office are in
order.
For that reason, BCMS created the Unsung Hero Award as a way
to recognize the hard work, dedication and commitment of the of-
fice staff in the physician practices.
This program allows the physicians to show their appreciation for
the contributions these staff members offer to them. Recognizing
the contributions that these employees make to the physician prac-
tice encourages hard work, dedication and loyalty to the practice.
In the long run, this recognition helps the physician members of BCMS have a solid foundation to offer the best patient
care and trust that their staff members will work hard to support them.
If you would like to recognize a staff member in your practice, please visit the BCMS website at www.bcms.org and click
on the Member Services tab or call Brissa Vela at 210-301-4371.
