While deployed I e-mailed with a family friend. “I’m in a place filled with sun and sand,” I said; he laughed.
While I was fighting a war, he was fighting cancer.
“If you promise to stay safe,” he said, “I’ll promise to continue fighting. deal?” Our last exchange.
He fought valiantly for four more years.
Alyson Randall, UIWSOM class of 2021, is an Army Veteran, active-duty Army wife and mother to 2 children.
She is a native of Pennsylvania and currently resides in San Antonio.

Andrew Franks is a first year medical student at
The University of the Incarnate Word School of
Osteopathic Medicine. Upon finishing high school
in Tomball, Texas he received his bachelor of Sci-
ence and Arts at The University of Texas at Austin
and his Master of Science at the University of
North Texas Health Science Center. Andrew has
a strong fascination with science and medicine
with a peaked interest in radiology, pathology and
family medicine.
