A Brief History of the Bexar
County Medical Society’s
Quest for a Permanent Facility
The Bexar County Medical Society, which traces its history back to 1853,
did not have a fixed location for its meetings and activities for the first
several decades of its existence. In those early years, after being
founded by Dr. George
Cupples, the society was
still very small and held its
meetings in various
locations downtown
including the old
courthouse on Soledad
Street, the Elks’ Club on
Commerce Street, the San
Antonio Loan and Trust
Company Building, the
University Club on
Commerce Street, the
Chamber of Commerce
Building on Losoya Street,
Dr. George Cupples and the first floor of the St.
Anthony Hotel.
