Embracing Our History
In January, 1853, forty-eight Texas physicians gathered in Austin to organize the Texas State Medical Association. In
September of that same year, a charter was issued to the Bexar County Medical Society (BCMS), making it the first
county medical society in Texas. Then, in 1919, BCMS became the first society in Texas to purchase and operate its own
office, a building at the intersection of Lexington and North St. Mary’s Street.
In 1933, during the midst of the hard times of the depression, the Bedell Moore property at 202 West French Place was
purchased and occupied by the Medical Society.
In 2004, the Medical Society headquarters was moved to a temporary, but more central location for physicians, with
plans to build a new home for BCMS in 2015. During this time, physicians have donated approximately $2 million for the
construction of this new building.
