DEADLINE: Prospective Private Practice Committee Accepting Nominations Until April 23
The TMA Board of Trustees has recommended the House of Delegates vote to form a standing committee of the board focusing on the unique and dire needs of private practice physicians. If approved at TexMed 2024 in May, committee members will immediately be appointed. Read more.

Dramatic Rise in U.S. Measles Cases Threaten Elimination Status, CDC Says
According to recent CDC data, as of April 4, 2024, there have been a total of 113 measles cases across the country this year. Of the 338 measles cases reported to the CDC since 2020, 29% occurred during the first quarter of this year. Measles has been considered eliminated in the U.S. since 2000, but this status is now threatened. Learn more.

Melatonin Industry Asked to Voluntarily Tighten Standards after Dramatic Rise in Childhood ER Visits
Melatonin supplement producers have 18 to 24 months to voluntarily add child-deterrent packaging and improve cautionary language on labels. This request comes after a recent CDC report showing approximately 11,000 children had emergency room visits between 2019 to 2022 after ingesting melatonin unsupervised. Read more.

U.S. Medical Drug Shortages Reach Record High
Americans are facing more shortages of the drugs they need for medical care than ever before. A record high of 323 different meds were in short supply during the first quarter of 2024. Notable shortages include cancer chemotherapy drugs, emergency medications, ongoing ADHD medication shortages, nervous system stimulants, and more. Learn more.
