TMA Recruiting Volunteers for Committee on TexMed Education
The TMA Committee on TexMed Education is actively recruiting new members. The committee is charged with assisting in the development of educational conferences that address the needs and interests of physicians, assisting in the selection of speakers, and reviewing evaluations from the previous year's conference. Submit a nomination. 

Bubonic Plague Strikes in Colorado
Health officials from Pueblo County in Colorado have confirmed a human case of bubonic plague after launching an investigation into the bacteria's presence last week. Officials have now urged anyone with symptoms to seek medical attention. Learn more.

Experts Warn Bird Flu Seems to be Slowly Mutating to Better Infect Humans
In a recent study, scientists found that while the current H5N1 virus strain isn't great at respiratory transmission, it has adapted to latch onto sialic acid receptors, such as those prevalent throughout human respiratory systems. Further study will be made. Read more.

CMS Proposes Increasing Payment Rates by 2.6% In 2025
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services issues a proposed rule on July 10 that would increase Medicare hospital outpatient prospective payment system rates by a net 2.6% in calendar year 2025 compared to 2024. This included a proposed 3.0% market update, offset by a 0.4% point cut for productivity. Learn more. 

Study Uncovers Potential Root Cause of Lupus
A study published Wednesday in the journal Nature outlines clear pathway for how the disease likely develops, pointing to abnormalities in the immune systems of people with lupus. The research demonstrates causation associated with lupus patients having a surplus of a particular T cell associated with damage in health cells and lack of another T cell associated with repair.
