Kids are back in school, and infectious diseases are ramping up. The Texas Medical Association (TMA) has new videos to help you educate families on germs and preventing illness, and an updated resource page for "Vaccines Defend What Matters". Check it out here

FDA Approves First RSV Vaccine for Pregnant Women to Protect Infants
The U.S. Drug and Food Administration (FDA) has approved a vaccine to protect infants from birth to six months against lower respiratory tract disease caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). The injection will be given to pregnant women at 32 to 36 weeks’ gestation. The FDA’s approval (early September) of Pfizer’s Abrysvo vaccine for newborns comes amid a frenzy of drug development and regulatory actions on RSV, a very common virus that can be deadly for the very young and very old but has gotten less attention than COVID-19 and the flu. Read more

CDC Warns Doctors to Be on Lookout for Deadly Flesh-Eating Bacteria
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is warning doctors to be on the lookout for deadly flesh-eating bacteria that may be in waters of the Gulf of Mexico and East Coast. The bacteria is known as Vibrio vulnificus or V. vulnificus. The CDC issued the health advisory earlier this month to urge health care providers to consider it as the possible cause of infected wounds from people who have been in coastal waters. Continue reading

COVID Surges Heading Into Fall: What You Need to Know
Rates of COVID-19 are rising as the summer ends, with new variants compounding concerns about the virus heading into the fall. Hospitalizations and deaths are rising by double-digit percentages, according to Centers for Disease Control (CDC) data, though rates remain far below pandemic-era levels. Cases could be rising faster, experts believe, with many cases going unreported. Read more
