The US Department of Health and Human Services reported that nearly 5 million calls, texts and online chat messages have been answered through 988. Deeming the past year as “transformative” in the United States’ ongoing efforts to tackle the nation’s mental health crisis, according to health officials. An as the service heads into its second year of existence, the three-digit number for the country’s mental health crisis lifeline still has some hurdles to overcome when it comes to awareness, staffing and routing. TMA, Lawmakers Working to Tackle Telemedicine Parity, Prior Authorization
Drs. Fite and Patt outlined TMA’s priorities at the state level, which include expanding health coverage to address the problem of the state’s uninsured and underinsured; reducing the impact and red tape of prior authorization; improving patient access to care through further advancement of telemedicine; and avoiding a now-delayed tax on medical billing companies, which would inevitably result in costs passed onto physicians. FDA Approves Antibody to Protect Infants From RSV
This fall, parents and pediatricians will have a new option to protect babies from a lung-attacking virus that is the leading cause of hospitalization in infants under a year old in the United States every year. The US Food and Drug Administration approved nirsevimab to protect newborns from respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Nirsevimab, which will be sold under the brand name Beyfortus, is not a vaccine. Vaccines prompt the body to make antibodies to defend against pathogens. Read more
