As BCMS marks its 170th
anniversary this September, we want to feature and
highlight the medical pioneers in our community through a series of
articles in San
Antonio Medicine magazine throughout the coming year.
To help us mark the occasion, we are asking you to help us identify
the medical pioneers of our city’s past, present and any new
medical pioneers who have discovered breakthrough technologies or
therapies, developed medical devices, etc.
Additionally, we want to identify the oldest living medical pioneer
and the medical pioneers who have been in practice for many years.
Please
send your replies by Friday, August 18, 2023, pioneers@bcms.org.
THANK YOU!

in the family is protected against serious diseases by getting
caught up on routine vaccinations. Continue reading

Pneumococcal Vaccines Protect Kids From Dangerous Diseases
Texas physicians have a message
for parents getting ready to send their kids to daycare or school –
make sure your children are up to date on their pneumococcal
vaccine. The vaccine prevents infectious diseases that spread
easily through a cough or sneeze in crowded settings. “It is
important for infants to be immunized at a young age, typically 2,
4, 6, and 15 months of age, especially before daycare entry,” said
Valerie Smith, MD, who is a pediatrician and chair of the Texas
Medical Association (TMA) Council on Science and Public Health. She
said very young children and older adults are most at risk for
pneumococcus. Continue reading
Medicaid Rules
Are Changing
On April 1, 2023, the state
of Texas will begin the process of rechecking Medicaid eligibility
for about 2.7 million Texas women and children who currently
receive Medicaid coverage. The state will renew coverage for those
who are still eligible for Medicaid. Texans who are no longer
eligible will either be enrolled in other health coverage options,
such as the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), or receive
information to sign up for other options, such as Healthcare.gov
Marketplace insurance. Read more
