$17 billion in COVID-19 relief funds medicine’s focal point during
the current special session of the Texas Legislature drew both
praise and recommendations for improvement from the Texas Medical
Association and several state specialty societies.

Afghan Evacuees Eligible for Health Insurance
Nearly 4,500 people in the
first group of evacuees to the U.S. from Afghanistan will resettle
in Texas. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services says
most evacuees will be eligible for health insurance, and the agency
has released guidance outlining their health coverage options. View the guidance.
OSHA COVID-19 Emergency Standards Raise Concerns for
Physician Practices
The OSHA emergency temporary standard (ETS) took
effect in full July 21 and required affected health care employers
to develop and implement COVID-19 protection plans that include
patient screening and management; physical distancing of at
least 6 feet when feasible; physical barriers; and
recordkeeping, among other requirements. These standards are
separate from the forthcoming OSHA regulations following the Biden administration's vaccination
requirements for employers with 100 or more workers.
Those regulations are expected in late September.

TMA Urges House
Committee to Bolster Border Care Access
Texas Medical Association
President E. Linda Villarreal submitted written testimony to the
Texas House Public Health Committee and testified in person on
Tuesday when the committee met to discuss health care access along
the Texas-Mexico border. In the five-page letter, Dr. Villarreal
laid out some of the most pressing health care challenges along the
border, where more than 3 million Texans live and work.
