School of Medicine Student to Serve as TMA Trustee
Swetha Maddipudi, a rising fourth year medical
student at UT Health San Antonio Long School of Medicine, was
elected to represent the TMA Medical Student Section
(TMA-MSS) on the TMA Board of Trustees. She is vice chair of the TMA-MSS Executive Council and a
past president of Long School of Medicine’s TMA chapter, where she
spearheaded student involvement in TMA’s First Tuesdays at the Capitol and
helped secure two TMA Foundation grants to host local vaccination
clinics for medically underserved San Antonio residents. Read More
Coronavirus Immunity Lasts At Least A Year, Two
Studies Indicate
The New York Times (5/26, Mandavilli)
reports, “Immunity to the coronavirus lasts at least a year,
possibly a lifetime, improving over time especially after
vaccination, according to two new studies.” In a study published in
Nature, researchers found that
among “people who had been exposed to the coronavirus about a year
earlier,” memory B cells “persist in the bone marrow and may churn
out antibodies whenever needed.” In the other study, posted on
bioRxiv, researchers found that “memory B cells continue to mature
and strengthen for at least 12 months after the initial
infection.”
Medicaid Covers Pfizer Adolescent COVID-19 Vaccine
As of May 10, the Texas Health and Human Services
Commission (HHSC) updated the state Medicaid and Children’s Health
Insurance Program formularies to include coverage of the
Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use in adolescents
aged 12 years and older. HHSC says it will follow the Medicare rate
for vaccine administration. Read more.
