Legislative & Socioeconomics Committee busy with candidate visits The
BCMS Legislative and Socioeconomics Committee, under the direction of
chairman, Alex Kenton, MD, has been busy all year visiting with candidates
for office and with current officeholders seeking re-election. From the
start of the year with the primary elections to the present, with the runoff
election for Senate District 19, committee members have visited with
candidates vying for seats in the state legislature and the courts to discuss
health and medicine issues of importance to patients and physicians. Most
recently, committee members met on Aug. 15 with Republican candidate for
Senate District 19, Pete Flores, a retired state game warden and Justice
Marialyn Barnard, who is seeking re-election to the Fourth Court of Appeals,
Place 2. The
runoff election for Senate District 19 is scheduled for Sept. 18 with early
voting beginning on Sept. 10. As previously reported in this column,
Pete Flores faces Democrat Pete Gallego, former state representative and
congressman in the race to fill the seat previously held by former Senator
Carlos Uresti. For
local discussion on this and other legislative advocacy topics, consider
joining the BCMS Legislative and Socioeconomics Committee by contacting Mary
Nava, chief government affairs officer at mary.nava@bcms.org. |

San Antonio City Council
approves paid sick leave ordinance By W. Scott Bailey – Senior Reporter, San Antonio Business
Journal The San
Antonio City Council on Thursday adopted an ordinance mandating that
employers within the city provide paid sick time to workers. The amendment to the city’s health code requires employers in
San Antonio to let workers accrue such paid time off — one hour of paid sick
time for every 30 hours worked — to use if they or a family member become
sick or injured; are victims of stalking, domestic abuse or sexual assault;
or otherwise require medical, mental or preventive care. The San Antonio City Council's decision, by a 9-2 vote,
follows a similar vote by the Austin City Council in February. That 9-2 vote
triggered immediate criticism from some state lawmakers, who have vowed to
enact legislation to negate the Capital City ordinance. |
