Governor Abbott announces call for a Special Session set to begin July 18

Last Tuesday, Gov. Abbott called the Texas Legislature back to work for a special session set to begin July 18.  The special session will focus on 20 items left unfinished during the regular session of the 85th Legislative Session.  The first order of business will be the Texas Medical Board sunset legislation and the renewal of the Texas Medical Practice Act.

Additionally, Gov. Abbott signed into law HB 62 by Rep. Tom Craddick (R-Midland), the statewide ban on texting while driving.  Sen. Judith Zaffirini (D-Laredo) was the bill’s Senate sponsor.  This legislation was a priority of TMA and the Texas Public Health Coalition (TPHC), of which BCMS is a member.

Please stay tuned to this column for continuing coverage on the special session in the coming weeks.

For local discussion on these and other legislative advocacy topics, consider joining the BCMS Legislative and Socioeconomics Committee by contacting Mary Nava, BCMS chief government affairs officer and lobbyist at mary.nava@bcms.org.
