Legislative Update

TMA releases 85th Legislative Session results

Here are the results of the 85th Legislative Session and how medicine issues fared during the 140-day regular session.  To read TMA’s report, click here.  For a quick summary of the outcome of key TMA legislation, click here.

Although the 85th session is now in the history books, our work is not done yet.  On July 18, the Texas House and Senate will be back in special session to take up the sunset legislation for the continuance of state agencies, among which includes the Texas Medical Board (TMB). The TMB sunset will be the top priority kicking off the special session. Stay tuned to this column for more details of the special session.

For local discussion on these and other legislative advocacy topics, consider joining the BCMS Legislative and Socioeconomics Committee by contacting Mary Nava, BCMS Chief Government Affairs Officer and Lobbyist, at mary.nava@bcms.org.

Dr. Catherine Epps will be leading an in-depth discussion on topics like:

  • Zika cases and preparedness in Texas
  • Screening and testing recommendations for pregnant women in Texas, as well as interpreting those results
  • Evaluating congenital Zika syndrome in infants, and
