LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
Senate and House Committees Named; Hearings Underway The Senate and House Committees have been appointed by Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and House Speaker Joe Straus, respectively.  Committee work is underway and hearings are ongoing, including public testimony on a variety of issues.  Bills were filed last week on one of TMA’s legislative priorities – preventing chronic diseases, curbing tobacco use and restraining the ill effects caused by tobacco.  Rep. John Zerwas, MD (R-Simonton), filed House Bill 1908, and Sen. Joan Huffman (R-Houston) filed Senate Bill 910, both of which aim to raise the legal age to use and possess tobacco in Texas from 18 to 21. Stay tuned to this column for more details on the status of bills pertaining to medicine as the 85^th Legislative Session continues.
