EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS

Doctors sought to volunteer in emergencies

BCMS, through its Emergency Preparedness Committee, is charged with providing medical services for relief shelters that are setup in San Antonio during the first 72 to 96 hours of an emergency disaster situation.  These may be natural or manmade disasters such as floods, hurricanes, tornados, terrorism or hazardous spills, etc.

The Texas Gulf Coast Hurricane Season usually reaches its peak in September. We have been very fortunate that there has not been a need to evacuate to San Antonio for the last several years, but we need to be prepared for the unknown!

We are looking for physician volunteers who would make up medical teams to provide basic medical care during an emergency. We need a core group of family practice, internal medicine, pediatrics, orthopedics, geriatrics, etc. but all physicians are encouraged to volunteer. It just depends on the type of incident as to what other specialties will be needed and who will be contacted first. If a disaster response is needed from BCMS, physician volunteers will be assigned to coordinate medical care, with medical teams volunteering for shifts of up to eight hours in a shelter.

Additionally:

  • As a volunteer, you have the right to say "yes" or "no" to any requests for your services.
  • Physicians do not assume any liability or obligation to volunteer.
  • Your information will be kept secure and shared only with emergency-management officials during a disaster response.
  • You have the right to decide how far you are willing to travel and how long you are willing to serve.
