84th Legislative Session begins Jan. 13
First
Tuesdays just around the corner
By Mary E. Nava, MBA
Chief Governmental and Community Relations Officer
Next Tuesday, Jan. 13, the Texas
Legislature will convene for the 84th Legislative Session in
Austin. As your representative and lobbyist, I'll be traveling
daily to attend the legislative session and also to work with the
Texas Medical Association on legislative bills and meetings with
our elected officials and their staffs. I'll spend the opening day
of session visiting all the offices of our Bexar County delegation
to say hello and meet the staffers. One of my priorities for the
day is to begin setting appointments for our Feb. 3 First Tuesdays
visit to the Capitol.
BCMS President James Humphreys, MD, encourages all our
members to sign up and attend at least ONE First Tuesdays during
the coming session.
"We need
all our physicians to get involved in our discussions with our
elected officials," Dr. Humphreys said. "I highly
encourage you to come witness first-hand how you can make a
difference and make your voice heard. There's strength in numbers,
and the impression created by a sea of white coats walking the
halls of the Capitol is talked about over and over by our
legislators and their staffs."
Please stay tuned to this column for session
highlights and information updates. If you are interested in going
up to Austin to participate in one of the First Tuesdays, please
visit the TMA website
to register.
For local discussion on this and other advocacy
topics, consider joining the BCMS Legislative and Socioeconomics
Committee by contacting Mary Nava.
