BCMS
Emergency Preparedness Committee
seeks
volunteers
The BCMS Emergency Preparedness
Committee is seeking additional physician volunteers who will
comprise teams providing basic medical care during an emergency.
The goal is to
enhance local emergency-response capabilities by adding more
physician volunteers to the emergency preparedness roster.
BCMS is charged with providing medical services for
general and special-needs shelters during the first 72 to 96 hours of
an emergency disaster situation. These may be natural disasters, such
as floods, hurricanes or tornadoes, or those created by humans, such
as terrorism or hazardous spills.
Thoracic surgeon David Cohen, MD,
chair of the BCMS Emergency Preparedness Committee, said he hopes to
have at least 200 physician-volunteers in the core group. All
physicians are encouraged to volunteer.

a physician volunteer, click here, or for more information,
call 301-4363.

Eight days left in 84th legislative session; sine die is June 1
Chief Governmental and Community Relations
Officer
At the time of this writing,
numerous conference committee hearings are taking place on a
variety of bills. In addition, the Senate is in the final stages of
hearing house bills, and the House is hearing senate bills.
Last week, BCMS member James
Lukefahr, MD, testified on behalf of TMA in the Senate Health and
Human Services Committee in support of House Bill 2171, which would
prevent the automatic deletion of an 18-year-old's immunization
records from the ImmTrac registry and would instead preserve them
until the individual turns 26 years of age. The bill was approved
by the committee on May 21.
Stay tuned to this column as the
84th legislative session continues.
