New
BCMS building takes shape
The four walls of the new BCMS building on Loop 1604
were raised this week as construction continues at the site, 4334
North Loop 1604, between Lockhill-Selma Road and N.W. Military Drive.
Passers-by on Loop 1604 have a clear view of the Alamo-like facade on
the 20,000-square-foot building. Medical society employees have begun
preparations for the move, which is expected at the end of the year.

Abbott vetoes two TMA-backed bills
June 21 is last day for signing,
vetoing legislation
Chief
Governmental and Community Relations Officer
With a number of
positive outcomes already achieved in the 84th Legislative Session,
it was quite a shock and a real disappointment to physicians that
Gov. Greg Abbott vetoed two mental health bills soon after the
session ended.
The first bill,
Senate Bill 359, would have allowed a four-hour emergency department
hold for a mentally ill patient that a physician would deem to be a
danger to themselves or to others. The other bill, House Bill 225,
would have protected from prosecution people who seek emergency care
for someone suffering a drug overdose, and also would have allowed
first responders to administer an opioid antagonist to save someone
from a potentially fatal overdose.

about medicine's wins and losses during the legislative session,

update from
TMA's vice presdient of advocacy Darren Whitehurst.
Stay tuned to
this column for additional updates as we wait for more news from the
governor's office. Information on the status of legislation
will be provided as it becomes available.

BCMS Call for Nominations
|
Physician-members
of the Bexar County Medical Society:
This is the time of year we ask for nominations for
elected officers to lead the Bexar County Medical Society. I would
like to challenge all member-physicians to think hard about who
should be elected to impact the direction of medicine in San Antonio
and Bexar County.
We need strong leaders. Apathy is not a
strategy. Please think about who you want to represent you to your
colleagues and the outside world; let's have multiple candidates
running for every position. Practices would be well-served to designate
representative physicians from those practices or other practices to
get involved to make a difference. We really need you! The society is
only as good as the physicians you elect to run it!
Thanks,
Steve Fitzer
CEO/Executive Director
Bexar County Medical Society
