Important registrations under

the Physician Payments Sunshine Act in progress

CMS to make information public this year

On Aug. 1, 2013, the Physician Payments Sunshine Act, which is part of the ACA, took effect, requiring manufacturers and group purchasing organizations to report physician ownership interests.

Under the act, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has already opened payments registration for reporting year 2013 for applicable manufacturers of drugs, medical devices and biologicals. On June 1, 2014, registration began for physicians through the Enterprise Portal, which notifies physicians of when their financial disclosures are available for public review. Next month, in early July, registration will begin for accessing the CMS Open Payments System.
