Jayesh Shah, MD, wraps up year

as AAPI president

By Mary E. Nava, MBA

Chief Governmental and Community Relations Officer

The American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) held its 32nd annual convention June 25-29 in San Antonio.

Dr. Jayesh Shah concluded his year as AAPI president by orchestrating a plan to bring the national AAPI convention to San Antonio for the first time. The convention was filled with numerous speakers, entertainers and celebrities from the United States and India.  Among the notables attending the convention was India's Hon. Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Harsh Vardhan, MD, who delivered an incredible presentation on the work he and other leaders are doing in collaboration with 24 countries to improve the healthcare climate and access to care in India.

This year, under Dr. Shah's leadership, the AAPI convention hosted the inaugural launch of the organization's "Be Fit. Be Cool" walk, with the focus of combating obesity.  On hand for the opening ceremony and walk were  the 2014 Miss America, Nina Davuluri, the first Indian American to be chosen as Miss America, and Sendhil Ramamurthy, an American actor known for his roles in "Heroes" and "Covert Affairs." He is the son of Drs. Somayaji and Rajam Ramamurthy.

Dr. Shah commented: "I want to thank the Bexar County Medical Society and its members for their strong support in hosting the AAPI national convention in San Antonio.  I appreciate the hard work and commitment by all my colleagues who helped plan and execute a successful convention culminating my year as president of AAPI.  Also, I want to thank the BCMS Alliance for their support and participation in the AAPI inaugural Be Fit. Be Cool walk."
