Texas House Speaker Joe Straus announces new Select Committee on Health Care Education and Training

San Antonio State Rep. Justin Rodriguez named to committee

By Mary E. Nava, MBA

Chief Governmental and Community Relations Officer

Some exciting news for the state's healthcare sector: Texas House Speaker Joe Straus announced in a July 24th news release the creation of a new committee -- Select Committee on Health Care Education and Training -- which will examine the healthcare workforce and the growing needs of this sector, along with preparing more students for healthcare industry careers.  To read the speaker's news release, click here.

Chairing the committee will be Rep. Susan King (R-Abilene); a nurse and wife of TMA President Austin King, MD. In addition, San Antonio State Rep. Justin Rodriguez (D-125) is among those selected to sit on this very important committee, which will work on this issue during the 84th Legislative Session, which kicks off in January.

For local discussion on this and other advocacy issues, consider joining the BCMS Legislative and Socioeconomics Committee by contacting Mary Nava.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT

BE WARY OF NEW SCAM:

FAKE KIDNAPPINGS

Please be aware that there is a frightening "virtual kidnapping" telephone ransom scam that is targeting doctors in San Antonio and other parts of Texas. The caller claims to be a member of the Mexico cartel or mafia and tells you that they have kidnapped a loved one.  They are very convincing and often have a crying child or a person begging for their life in the background. They will demand a large or small sum of money to be wired to Mexico. It is a "virtual kidnapping" because your loved one has NOT been kidnapped, and you have just given money to the scammer. Please be mindful of what is posted on social media. This is how many of the extortionists get information about you and your family.

BCMS physician members have been targets of this scam. If you receive a call like this, remain calm, take note of information such as the caller's phone number, where you are asked to send money and the location of the kidnappers.

Report the call to the police.

BCMS Alliance Junior Volunteer Committee

open to physicians' high school students

Do you have a high school student interested in joining other medical family children involved in community service through the BCMS Alliance Junior Volunteer Committee?

This committee was active in the March Siclovia Hard Hats for Little Heads event and served at the American Cancer Society Rio Cibolo Day Camp for children with cancer in June.

The BCMS Alliance has opportunities for your family to be involved in helping out our community this school year, too.

Junior Volunteer Committee Chair Mona Talukdar is planning a meeting of the appointed high school officers, student board members and student committee members. This meeting will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 13, for all interested BCMS(A) children in high school who wish to serve on the student committee.

The committee has applied for a TMA Foundation grant for a community healthcare project they are planning. This group has been active in projects serving Bexar County health needs and will be developing their mission statement, goals and long-term planning at this meeting. Please make plans to attend.

Contact Mona Talukdar at 210-584-4238 for more information and meeting attendance. Pizza will be served.
