March's Unsung Hero honored
Rick White of Greater San Antonio
Emergency Physicians (GSEP) has been named the BCMS Unsung Hero for
March.
Mr. White, who has been the
administrative leader of GSEP for more than 10 years, has assembled
and leads a team of dedicated staff, who come to work each day with
an attitude of "what can I do to make GSEP better," said
the group's physicians in their nomination.
Among Mr. White's many
accomplishments in the past year have been hiring a new accounting
manager/controller; renewing a hospital service agreement for three
years; realizing significant savings from a renegotiated management
services agreement; reviewing and revising the professional
courtesy policy; adopting an online compliance training program;
updating and adopting the professional fees schedule; adopting a
new business office reporting system with more robust features to
improve accessibility to patient information, and many others.
"Rick reminds us consistently that the success of
GSEP is because of the high-quality care that we deliver to
patients each and every day," his nominators said.
"He has created an administrative team that allows our doctors
to be doctors and confidently trust that he will conduct our
business affairs with integrity and let us focus on providing
quality care."
The Unsung Hero program allows
BCMS members to recognize their office managers/administrators for
their dedication and hard work in assisting physicians in
delivering the best attention and care to patients.
Physician
members: Please remember to recognize your "Unsung Hero."
Monthly deadlines and additional information are here.

Workers' Compensation transition to ICD-10 code system delayed
On March 18, the Division of Workers'
Compensation (DWC) issued a memo stating that beginning Oct. 1, 2014,
the Texas workers' compensation system would transition from the
use of the International Classification of Diseases, 9th edition,
Clinical Modification and Procedure Coding System (ICD-9) to the
International Classification of Disease, 10th Edition, Clinical
Modification and Procedure Coding System (ICD-10) for medical billing,
processing and reporting in alignment with federal regulations. The
federal regulations adopt standard medical data codes sets that apply
to the Medicare system, which is regulated by the Centers for Medicare
and Medicaid Services (CMS).
Recent federal legislation led to the
signing of H.R. 4302 by President Barack Obama which includes a
provision that delays the implementation of the ICD-10 to no earlier
than Oct. 1, 2015. The DWC anticipates that CMS will follow suit by
issuing policy notices regarding this legislation.
see the complete memo from the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI).
TDI will be conducting one-hour free educational programs
on this topic and the new utilization review rules in May at all local
DWC field offices. See the division calendar for dates and times here.
