U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration reclassifies hydrocodone products

Change effective Oct. 6

By Mary E. Nava, MBA

Chief Governmental and Community Relations Officer

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration recently published a final rule reclassifying drugs containing hydrocodone combinations from Schedule III to Schedule II.

Although TMA, through House of Delegates deliberations held during TexMed in May, objected to these changes, the move is being implemented in an effort to curb abuse of these types of medications.

To read the final rule as published in the Federal Register and to learn more about what this rule means for physicians and prescribing, click here.

For local discussion on this and other practice management topics, consider joining the BCMS Legislative and Socioeconomics Committee by contacting Mary Nava.

CLARIFICATION

Bexar County Medical Society staff scheduled the fall General Membership Meeting for 6:30 p.m. Sept. 24, with the understanding that the Jewish observance of Rosh Hashana begins Sept 25. However, the observance begins at sundown on Sept. 24.

BCMS apologizes for the error. It was not our intent to conflict with this very important time of the year for our Jewish physicians. Efforts will be made to avoid similar conflicts in the future.
