Evaluating
currently available quality improvement programs
By
John K. Wisniewski
BCMS
CEO/Executive Director
Many physicians don't take
advantage of financial incentives offered by various quality
improvement programs, many of which will become penalty programs in
the coming years.
There are several active programs,
such as Medicare's Physician Quality Reporting System (PQRS), Blue
Cross Blue Shield's and Aetna's Bridges to Excellence (BTE), Medical
Home, and value based contracting.
TMA has new tools to help practices
evaluate the benefits of participating and assist in implementation.

Budget
Conference Committee
making
progress
By Mary E. Nava, MBA
BCMS Chief Governmental and
Community Relations Officer
Last week, the Budget Conference
Committee completed the details of the Article II portion of the
state budget dealing with health and human services spending for
2014-15.
The proposed Article II budget
includes $225 million in new funding for mental health
services. This is a huge success for the mental health
system. The new funds target specific initiatives,
including: prevention, early identification, community-based
services, and inpatient hospital care.
These are some of the new mental
health initiatives slated for improvement by the legislature:
- $4
million to improve mental health services for veterans,
such as peer-to-peer counseling,
- $5
million to enhance prevention
and early
identification of mental illness in
school-aged children,
- $25
million for additional crisis
services to be provided by local mental health
authorities, and
- $25
million to promote public-private partnerships
to improve mental health care delivery and services.
Stay tuned to this column for
more updates on the state budget and other bills of importance to
medicine as the 83rd session continues.
