Draft proposal

would repeal SGR

By John K. Wisniewski

BCMS CEO/Executive Director

Leaders of the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee released the framework of a plan that, in their words, "would repeal SGR and, in return, replace it with an improved fee for service system in which providers develop quality measures that will lead to better care in a more efficient manner."

Two Texas congressmen -- Energy and Commerce Health Subcommittee Vice Chairman Michael Burgess, MD (R-Lewisville), and Ways and Means Health Subcommittee Chairman Kevin Brady (R-The Woodlands) -- have played major roles in drafting this legislation.

This would be a good week to read the document

Keeping abreast of the direction of these important changes will help position your  practice for the future.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Joshua Creek Ranch

memberships still available

We still have two vacancies available at Joshua Creek Ranch through the BCMS corporate membership. The cost has been discounted to $500 for now through February 2014.

Located in the Texas Hill Country just 45 minutes northwest of San Antonio and 90 minutes southwest of Austin, Joshua Creek Ranch occupies a uniquely diverse terrain including miles of Joshua Creek and Guadalupe River bottomland planted in fields of grain crops for prime pheasant hunting habitat; bordered by limestone bluffs that rise to oak- and elm-studded pastures lush with prairie grasses providing perfect quail hunting cover; and densely wooded areas conducive to Texas deer hunting, both whitetail and axis.

Open throughout the year, Joshua Creek Ranch's hunting season from October through March is complemented by year-round sporting clays, Texas fly-fishing for rainbow trout November through May, and spring-summer activities including corporate meetings and retreats, reunions, private parties, a Texas summer youth program, river sports such as kayaking, canoeing and tubing, workshops for artists and musicians, and more.

In case you missed this last week:  Please check your emails for an important message from TMA President Stephen Brotherton, MD. Dr. Brotherton is calling on all TMA members to contact the offices of their U.S. senators and representatives to send an important message on three items of importance to medicine:  Repeal SGR; Stop ICD-10; and legalize private contracting.

As mentioned in the letter from Dr. Brotherton, here is a link to TMA's Grassroots Action Center, which also includes talking points on the issues and TMA's 2013 federal agenda.

For local discussion on these and other advocacy topics, consider joining the BCMS Legislative and Socioeconomics Committee by contacting Mary Nava at mary.nava@bcms.org.
