San Antonio has
an Active Living Plan that is endorsed by the Mayor's Fitness
Council. Under this plan, physicians are encouraged to make
physical activity a "vital sign" that is assessed and
discussed with their patients.
There are three
recommended actions to implement this strategy:
- Assess
patient's physical activity and discuss ways to progress toward
meeting the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. For more
information, click here.
- Include
fields for tracking physical activity in patient records.
- Encourage
healthcare professionals to be role models for active lifestyles
for patients.

For physicians interested in
participating in the Physician Education Loan Repayment Program
(PELRP), you have until Aug. 31 to submit an application.
A $33.8 million appropriation, as
set forth by the Texas Legislature, provides much-needed funding to
expand this program, which will now allow physicians who treat
large numbers of Medicaid patients to also submit applications for
consideration.
TMA provides a number of
resources to help you navigate the process for applying and
submitting applications.
This link
includes information and an application for enrollment, along with
other resource links to the PELRP website and the U.S. Department
of Health and Human Services.

advocacy topics, consider joining the BCMS Legislative and
