Board of Ethics

The BCMS Board of Ethics supervises medical ethics of membership and counsels individual members where circumstances warrant; examines applicants for membership; investigates suspected violations of code of conduct and prefers charges when indicated; receives investigative charges of unethical conduct made against Society members by another member and makes proper disposition of each case. Unless there is additional business, the Board of Ethics shall review and approve/disapprove applicants for membership via e-mail every month.

The Board of Ethics also receives, investigates, and mediates complaints from patients or insurance companies brought against a member of the Society; hears matters of unprofessional conduct, violations of principles of medical ethics or any other matter involving patient/physician relationship; hears and/or reviews insurance complaints; investigates and supervises ethical deportment of membership and receives complaints from general public. Meets as needed.

Composition
The Board of Ethics shall have fifteen members, each elected for a term of three years; five to be elected each year. Nominees for this Board are active members in the Bexar County Medical Society for at least ten years. The member receiving the largest number of votes at the time of election shall become the chair during the third year. The member receiving the second highest number of votes at the time of election shall serve as vice-chair during the third year. Five members constitute a quorum.
